Here is her story:

If you ask me why I want to study at YUST, I would tell you about my vision and heart for this place. I have always had this dream since I was young to expand my horizons by studying abroad. I felt as a young child that others around me could easily study abroad because they had the means yet I didn't think I would ever be able to afford to. Yet YUST became the way that I could realize my dream of seeing the world and meeting people from other countries, giving me a greater perspective. There is no other school like this one in the world. To me I felt that in some ways this school is better than Harvard. So many of the Korean diaspora can be found here. When I was studying at the Social Academic Educational Center on YUST Campus I met with so many friends who were Korean Chinese, Chinese, South Korean and Russian Korean. I remember one time when we all were eating together in our dormitory. We were sitting in a circle and playing a game. It was so interesting because we were all talking in different languages. Some were speaking Russian, others Korean, and also Chinese. At that time I was so touched and I asked my friends, "who else can have an experience like this?" I felt so blessed and thankful to be at a school like this. Being able to communicate with these students from all over the world would help us to become unified.
In the Fall of 2015 I entered YUST as an English Major. English was a new thing to me. I didn't have a basic foundation in English so I needed to study harder in order to do well. Even though it was hard to learn English I was falling in love with this school. The professors here were teaching us how to build character and serving us. They inspired me to be salt and light to the students around me. As an English major I can communicate with my fellow Chinese students and I hope to be a gifted person who can make a difference in the world. However because I don't have a good foundation in English, I really need this time with my English professors in order to improve my English. I have participated in various activities where I practiced speaking English with Chinese Students, and even though I couldn't speak very well, I did not give up or lose confidence. Since then I have progressed a lot and I have had many opportunities to practice my English with native English speakers. Some professors and other foreigners living in Yanji from America and England have hired me to babysit and help them with various activities. This has helped me improve my English as well as helped with some of my living costs.
I have had the privilege of helping my younger classmates and fellow students, giving counsel and advice about life decisions. I feel so honored to be able to encourage and help them in any way I can. Even though I have had some ups and downs in my life I feel that it was all worthwhile. I know I am lacking in so many ways, but I want to keep pressing on and show others that if I can do it anyone can do it! If I graduate from YUST, I want to share not only the knowledge I have received but also the life lessons taught to me by my professors. I have a desire to teach art, entertainment, and music at an international high school. I am also interested in doing trade and business in China.
In conclusion, I am so thankful to be attending this university and especially to have made so many international friends. It is amazing that South Koreans can come to China to study here and experience different cultures that can lead to more opportunities to go out into the world and make a difference.
Right now I am in a more difficult situation than when I first started, and it seems that I might not be able to continue with school. The reason is because my parents are in a difficult financial situation and we cannot afford to pay this semester's and next semester's tuition. Because I started school at an older age than normal I don't want to delay finishing school. If you can give me the opportunity to continue studying, after I graduate I will do my best to help and serve those in need. I will do my best to live a life worthy of the grace and love that I have received here at YUST.

저희 집은 나라에서 도움을 받고 사는 기초 생활 수급자 입니다. 어머니는 2000년도에 이혼하시고 16년간 아픈 몸으로 홀로 저희를 양육하셨습니다. 제가 초등학생때 갑자기 갑상선 저하증과항진증 B형간염으로 건강이 악화 되셨습니다. 치료중에 어머니의 갑상선은 제거되었습니다. 그래서 갑상선 호르몬 약을 평생 복용해야 하십니다. 갑상선 제거 후에 어머니께서는 몸이 쉽게 피곤해져서 육체적 노동을 필요로하는 일을 하실 수 없게 되었습니다. 부모님께서 이혼한 이후에 어머니와 오빠와 저는 지하 주차장에 있는 8평정도의 방에서 살았습니다. 그 집은 매일 곰팡이가 집에 피고 매연이 저희 집 창문 넘어로 들어왔습니다. 지금은 감사하게도 어머니께서는 국가가 가정형편이 어려운 사람들이 살 수 있도록 배려해준 임대아파트에서 살고 계시지만 어렸을 때 살 던 집에는바퀴벌레와 쥐가 돌아다닐때가 많았으며, 그 당시 제가 초등학교를 다니고 있을 때였는데, 저는 전교에서 왕따를 당하며 심한 구타와 괴롭힘으로 정신과 상담과 우울증 치료를 받았습니다. 그리고저는 청소년 시절 여러가지 장사를 비롯한 여러가지 아르바이트와 생활을 위해 수많은 도전을 해보았습니다. 그런데 돌아보면 힘들었던 그러한 경험들이 제가 뮤지컬 배우를 할 때 많은 감정표현과 연기에 도움이 되었던 것 같습니다. 또한 그런 경험들은 훗날 저 뿐만이 아니라 어쩌면 다른 사람에게도 도움을 줄 수 있것이라고 믿습니다. 오빠는 무에타이 선수로 활동하고 음악인의 삶을 살다가 이렇게 더이상 돈없이 비젼없이 살 수 없다고 생각하여 주짓수라는 무술을 연마해서 단증을따고 특수부대에서 2000:1의 경쟁률을 뚫고 직업군인으로 4년간 근무하고 지금은 운동선수와 아르바이트를 하면서 지내고 있습니다. 그래서 얼마전까지만해도 저의 학비를 일부 도와주긴 했지만, 지금은 사정이 생겨서 그럴 형편이 되지 못합니다.
이 학교에서 공부하고 싶은 이유는 바로 저의 가슴에서 불러일으키는 비젼때문입니다. 저는 꿈이항상 있었습니다. 내가 젊을 때에 외국에 가서 견문을 넓힌다는 것이 나와 다른 부유한 사람들만느낄 수 있는 것이 아니라, 나라는 사람도 기회가 있다면 젊은 날에 견문을 넓히고 세상을 이해하고 싶었습니다. 이 학교가 저의 비전을 열어줄 통로가 되리라고 생각합니다. 이 학교는 아무리 봐도 세계에서 가장 좋은 학교입니다. 어떻게 보면 하버드 보다도 좋은 학교입니다. 그 이유는 세계에 흩어져있는 한민족뿐만 아니라 이곳 중국인들과 하나가 될 수 있기 때문입니다. 저는 기숙사에서 여러 친구들과 좋은 교우관계를 갖었습니다 함께 밥을 먹고 함께 사회교육원에서 공부하는 한족과, 조선족, 한국 유학생 그리고 고려인 친구까지 모두 저의 방에 모여 동그란 타원으로 앉아서이야기를 하고 함께 어울려 좋은 시간을 보냈습니다. 게임을 할 때는 우리는 서로 중국어, 한국어, 영어, 러시아어로 통역을 하며 재밌는 시간을 보냈습니다. 너무나도 감회가 새로웠습니다. 그때 저는 친구들에게 말했습니다. "우리 학교 처럼 좋은 학교가 없다고 살아 생전 언제 누가 이런 진귀한경험을 할까, 각기다른 문화와 언어속에서 작은 게임을 할때에도 여러언어와 몸짓 발짓을 사용하면서 소통하려는 상황과 이시간에 깊이 감사하다고" 이야기했습니다. 그래서 영어과를 지원하게되었습니다. 세상 사람들과 소통하며, 공감하고 모두가 하나되어 사랑하는 세상이 되었으면 합니다. 영어는 사실 제게는 아주 새로운 분야입니다. 노력은 많이 하지만, 기초가 워낙 없어서 어렵지만 더 많은 노력을 해야합니다. 하지만 이런 어려움 가운데서 더 이학교를 더 사랑하는 마음이 생겼습니다. 이 학교의 교수님들의 참된 인성교육으로 저희를 섬겨주시며, 내가 가는 길만 비추는사람이 아닌 남의 길을 비춰주는 그런 빛을 내는 빛, 맛을 내는 소금이 되라고 가르쳐주셨습니다.
이 학교에서 영어과에 다니면서 영어를 공부하고 또 중국 친구들과 소통해서 졸업할때에는 세상을 위해 일을 할 수 있는 좋은 인재가 되고 싶습니다. 하지만 기초가 너무 없어서 이곳 과기대에계신 영어과 교수님들과 누구보다 많은 대화의 시간을 가지고 그 분들께 많은 것들을 배우려고 하고 있습니다. 또한 열심히 중국친구들과 영어와 중국어로 소통하려하고 여러 활동에도 열심히 참여했습니다. 그리고 언어를 많이 못하더라도 주눅들지 않고 언제나 미소를 잃지 않으며 말을 걸고도전했습니다. 그래서 저의 실력에 많은 진보를 보였습니다. 저의 이노력은 감사하게도 여러 기회를 주셨습니다. 많은 미국 국적을 가진 교수님들의 자녀들의 보모로 영어를 쓰며 아르바이트 하며생활비에 도움이 되었고, 또 소개를 받아 다른 영어권가족의 보모로 일하고 있습니다. 그리고 저보다 어린 중국 조선족 친구들에게 좋은 언니로 그들의 삶의 고민을 좋은 방향으로 이끌어주는 언니역할도 하고있습니다. 힘들긴 하지만 정말 보람된 삶이고 행복합니다. 끝까지 해 보고 싶습니다. 저 같은 부족한 사람도 가난하고 부유한 사람도 결국 해낼 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 싶습니다.

만약 제가 이곳을 졸업할 수 있다면, 학교에서 배운 지식 뿐 아니라 교수님들께서 가르쳐주시는값진 교훈들을 다른 사람들에게 전하고 싶습니다. 그리고 제가 디자인고등학교를 다니며 3년간 전공했던 디자인 미술 분야와 뮤지컬 분야, 즉 예체능 분야를 가르치고 싶습니다. 그 후에는 중국에서 무역분야 일을 하고 싶습니다. 그래서 자비량 선교를 하고싶습니다. 저의 기본적 베이스는 모두가 하나님일 입니다. 제게 다양한 재능이 있음을 압니다. 이것은 주께서 주신것이지 저의 노력으로 얻어진것이 아님을 압니다. 그래서 평생 제가 살면서 저의 달란트를 땅에 묵히고 있는 것이 아니라 누군가를 항상 도우며 작은 예수처럼 사랑하는 사람으로 살고 싶습니다.

마지막으로 저는 이런 좋은 학교에 다니는 것을 감사합니다. 특히 조선족, 고려인, 미주 한국인그리고 중국과 세계로 나가길 원하는 한국인들을 우리 연변과기대에서 만날 수 있다는 사실에 감사드립니다. 그리고, 처음 시작때보다 더 어려워진 지금 형편으로는 도저히 이번학기에 남은 학비와 다음학기 학비를 낼 수 없어 학교를 더 다닐 수 없을 것 같지만, 이미 늦은 나이에 학업을 시작했기 때문에 가능한 휴학하지 않고 계속 공부할 수 있도록 기회를 주신다면 졸업 이후에 저를 필요로 하는 곳에서 최선을 다해 남에게 베풀며, 사랑하며 살겠습니다. 감사합니다.

As the first Chinese joint-venture university founded through the collaboration of the People’s Republic of China and numerous volunteers, Yanbian University of Science & Technology (YUST) has grown to become one of the top universities in the Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture of China. The university hopes to prepare its students to become leaders for the next generation of China and the world at large. Acting as role models, the international YUST professors are devoted to their students’ academic development to see them become individuals of service to their community, country, and the world.
